Welcome to Flicker #1

I'm very excited to kick off the first Flicker in New York City here at the Knitting Factory. We've got a lot of great films tonight from local filmmakers, as well as some pieces from Georgia, Maine, North Carolina, and even one Super 8 short from the UK. There will be a Flicker show roughly every two months, so keep those films coming! If you're thinking about shooting some Super 8 and never have before, there are loads of places to get cameras and other equipment in New York. Check out the Flicker Guide to World of Super 8 at the ticket counter for great listings of places to buy or rent equipment, process and transfer film, events, festivals, and lots of other resources. Many thanks tonight to Matt McDonald of the Knitting Factory for helping organize the show, Caitlin Dixon and Bryan Frye for lending projectors, and to Kyle McCabe and Cathryn Davis for helping make tonight's show happen.

A Short History of Flicker

Norwood Cheek started the Flicker show back in 1994 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with inspiration from a film festival in Athens, Georgia. When Norwood moved to Los Angeles, he started up a new chapter there. Since then, other Flickers have sprouted up in Austin, TX, Richmond, VA, Asheville, NC, and even Bordeaux, France. World domination continues with tonight's first New York City show. Flicker is a bi-monthly Super 8 and 16mm film screening dedicated to giving local filmmakers an outlet and a forum for their films. To submit your film, send it to: [see below]

Flicker Film Grant

Starting with the next Flicker, we'll be giving out a $100 grant at every show to a Super 8 filmmaker. These grants have been given out at other Flickers to great success and have produced some truly great films. Your $5 at the door goes towards projectors and repairs, as well as this grant. If you would like to be considered for the Flicker NYC grant, send a proposal for the film you would like to make or finish to:
